Old Lady on the Train

the empty seat to my left is there for the taking
here she comes
she drops her bags, panting
breathing heavily
“jesus lady, please don’t sit next to me”
jesus listened
she sat in the seat across the aisle
just an extra two feet separates us from living in the same world
this old lady and the rest are all the same
most usually angry or unhappy or both
big fatty arms
if not fatty, wrinkly where the arm and pit meet
wearing jewelry bought with their dead or divorced husband’s money
old ladies never change
and they are always replaced by new up-and-coming old women
for every young women she holds her old future self
and that’s a scary thought
i guess that’s what scares me about most women
